Here is a handpicked list of five underrated weekend places near Bangalore that remain peaceful and beautifully untouched. All these spots fall within 60 to 200 km, perfect for a one or two day trip. Expect canyons, ancient forts, silent dams, and views that feel far from the city chaos.

Let’s dive into 5 underrated weekend places near Bangalore

Gudibande Fort & Vatadahosahalli Lake

Vibe: Mini Scotland of Karnataka
Type: Easy hike, lakeside view, history

Gudibande Fort
Vatadahosahalli Lake

Gudibande Fort is a lesser known treasure from the seventeenth century. It resembles the famous Madhugiri Fort but is easier to climb. A forty five minute trek takes you to sweeping views that look especially magical during the monsoon. The real secret is the nearby Vatadahosahalli Lake, only six kilometers away, which offers misty hills and green fields that feel almost Scottish.

  • Distance: about 95 km from Bangalore
  • Best Transport: Car or bike
  • Drive Quality: Smooth highway with a very scenic last stretch
  • Best For: Families and casual trekkers
  • Insider Tip: There are no food outlets near the lake, so carry breakfast. Start the climb around 7 in the morning for the best weather.

Vani Vilasa Sagara (Marikanive Dam)

Vibe: Architectural wonder
Type: Water, history, heritage architecture

Built in 1907 by the Mysore Maharajas, Vani Vilasa Sagara is the oldest dam in Karnataka and one of the most striking. This is not a modern cement structure. It is a stone and lime dam with perfect symmetry and strong visual appeal. The contrast between the reservoir and the windmill filled hills makes it a dream location for photographers.

  • Distance: about 170 km
  • Best Transport: Car
  • Drive Quality: Relaxed highway driving on the Pune Bangalore stretch
  • Best For: Families, couples, slow travelers
  • Insider Tip: Visit the small temple at the base and walk to the viewpoint above. The scenery is especially picturesque in winter and post monsoon.

Avani Betta

Vibe: Mythological and rugged
Type: Trekking, temples, boulders

Known as the Gaya of the South, Avani Betta is believed to be the birthplace of Lava and Kusha. The landscape is filled with huge boulders that give it a rugged charm similar to Hampi. The trek is moderate and takes you past ancient rock cut temples. The summit offers a dramatic view of the rocky countryside.

  • Distance: about 95 km from Bangalore
  • Best Transport: Bike
  • Drive Quality: Mostly smooth roads, with some rural stretches
  • Best For: Solo bikers, trekkers, history lovers
  • Insider Tip: The Sita Parvati Temple at the top is the highlight. Stay for sunset to see the boulder landscape glow gold.

Dandiganahalli Dam

Vibe: Silence and solitude
Type: Nature, secluded waterbody, offbeat

If you want to spend time in pure silence, this is your perfect escape. Dandiganahalli is a finger shaped reservoir hidden inside a forest belt. Unlike Manchanabele or Hesaraghatta, you will not find crowds. Often you will be completely alone on the bridge that stretches into the reservoir. The early morning mist gives the place an almost cinematic feel.

  • Distance: about 85 km
  • Best Transport: Bike or SUV
  • Drive Quality: Last 6 to 7 km is a dirt track, ideal for adventure bikers
  • Best For: Solo travelers and couples
  • Insider Tip: Not suitable for kids because there are no shops or restrooms. Visit at sunrise for the best views.

Mandaragiri Hill (Basadi Betta)

Vibe: Spiritual and visually unique
Type: Short hike, architecture, lake view

Mandaragiri Hill is perfect for a half day plan. The colorful pinchi shaped Jain temple at the base looks like a peacock feather fan and stands out instantly. Behind it, a short climb of 435 steps leads to ancient Jain shrines and a panoramic view of Mydala Lake.

  • Distance: about 60 km
  • Best Transport: Bike or car
  • Drive Quality: Quick and smooth on Tumkur Road
  • Best For: Families, beginners, short trip seekers
  • Insider Tip: After the climb, drive to the quieter banks of Mydala Lake behind the hill. It is far more peaceful than the temple area.
